Lavender: Nature’s Extraordinary Secret

Toronto, ON, Canada –September 6, 2007 – Lavender has long been regarded for its splendour and uniquely breathtaking fragrance. It is more than just a flower that gives an exquisite view to its surroundings. It also has the power to heal, not only for physical injuries but also for emotional stress. With the ever-increasing popularity of natural skin care products, Lavender is fast becoming known as nature’s healer. Aromatherapists have known for a while about its benefits and with its supreme versatility it has led some to call it a medicine chest in a bottle.

With its different species and various uses, all could be beneficial to health as Lavender which is part of the Labiatae family, has long been used extensively in herbal medicine. The English lavender or Lavandula angustifolia highly yields an effective essential oil with a very sweet aroma. This extract may be utilized as an ointment, balm, fragrance, make up ingredient, tea, compress and many other significant applications. The essential oil that yields from French lavender or Lavandula dentata, has a higher content of ester which adds a stronger tinge to the scent. The Spanish lavender or Lavandula stoechas is not used in medicine; it is utilized mainly for landscaping purposes.

Lavender oil is an essential oil, derived from plants by the steam distillation of the flowers. Lavender is a native of the Mediterranean countries but the main source of Lavender is France. Lavender essential oil is excellent for the skin and adding its extract to soaps and bathwater gives off a fresh fragrance. It also helps repair skin problems while making the skin feel invigorated. With both antiseptic and sedative properties, this highly aromatic oil refreshes and tones the skin. Because of its soothing capabilities of the nerves and due to its high ester content, it is said to calm nervous heart complaints.

Lavender oil can be used topically to moisturize and revitalize the skin’s dermal layer as this flower’s extract is used for treating all sorts of skin disorders. Examples of these are blisters, acne, oily skin, boils, burns, cold sores, sunburn, wounds, psoriasis, and parasites such as lice. Lavender tea has a lot of uses for the body. Drinking lavender tea is an accepted remedy for headaches. It also soothes upset stomachs and eases up bowel movements. Cooled lavender tea is also an effective mouthwash as it doesn’t only leave a wonderful scent but also draw a smile on the face. To make a lavender tea, immerse two tablespoons of dried lavender flowers in one litre of hot water. This may also be applied to treat bruises or wounds. The warmth and the antiseptic qualities of the flower combine to help heal the wound. This can be done as a compress by dipping strips of dressing cloth or sanitized linen in the warm liquid until it can be applied on the bruised or wounded areas of the skin. Moreover, this flower’s extract could help ease the pain of sunburn and sunstroke.

Chest congestion can be treated with a warm lavender tea compress. By placing a warm compress of the tea on top of the chest, it could bring relief to the patient. It can also ease up breathing by inhaling the vapour of lavender. To do this, place the newly boiled lavender tea in a basin then cover it and the patients’ head with a bath towel allowing the patient to inhale the steam. This would make the patient absorb the scent to clear the airways from the nose to the lungs.

Lavender oil is one of the most favorite essential oils not only because of its wonderful qualities but also because of its great smell. Its calming and relaxing scent helps to combat stress and anxiety and can also be used as an anti-depressant for treating apprehension and depression. Its aroma has a soothing effect on the physical and mental stability of a person, as it is also superb for helping with asthma and migraines.

This flower's soothing properties are very well known for people who are stressed. Soaking in lavender scented bath is extremely comforting and rejuvenating. While cleansing and energizing the skin, the weariness of the day may just drift away. This flower is commonly used to facilitate sleep and relaxation in aromatherapy as it helps people sleep and be refreshed the next day shunning away the troubles of the past day.

Feel your tension and anxiety melt away with this soothing scent while its relaxing fragrance promotes a peaceful sleep. For a serene night’s sleep placing a bag of lavender buds under the pillow or a few drops of the essential oil on the pillow will create a soothing fragrance that can help calm anyone at the end of the day. A recommended relaxing and calming Lavender tea drink before bedtime can be made from steeping one teaspoon of lavender flower heads added to a cup of boiling water. These combined will help achieve a peaceful night’s sleep.

Wash Away Stress With Dead Sea Salt

Stress is a normal part of living in today's world. Whether your stress comes from your job, your commute, caring for your family or all of the above, your body's reaction to prolonged stress can lead to long-term health problems. So it is very important for your health and well being to help your body reduce its physical and emotional reaction to stress. Research has shown that a bit of quiet time spent soaking in a warm bath enhanced by Dead Sea salts and relaxing essential oils such as lavender will ease tension and reduce the effects of stress.

What does stress do to a women's body?

Women are especially vulnerable to the negative effects of stress due to the constant hormonal changes in their bodies. Stress can lead to fatigue, irritability, and can bring on physical symptoms including headaches, upset stomach, elevated blood pressure, chest pain, and sleeping problems. Prolonged, unrelieved stress can also lead to anxiety and depression. The link between stress and heart disease is well-established. But did you know that stress has been also been found to damage the immune system and make you more susceptible to many auto-immune diseases such as arthritis and Alzheimer's?

How can lavender scented Dead Sea salt help reduce stress?

The salt derived from the Dead Sea contains at least 21 different minerals with therapeutic properties that improve the health and appearance of the skin. Just soaking in a bath that contains a cup of dissolved Dead Sea salt will be good for your body and spirit.

Lavender essential oil gives Dead Sea salt the added power of scent to enhance your relaxation experience. Research has shown that scent is our most potent sense in evoking emotional responses. The health benefits of lavender essential oil include its ability to remove nervous tension, relieve pain, disinfect scalp and skin, enhance blood circulation and treat respiratory problems.

Lavender can be grown almost anywhere in the world and there are many excellent manufacturers of lavender essential oil working in the United States. Although some women prefer the gentle fragrance of French lavender, all lavender essential oils are grown and produced in similar ways. The flowers are harvested in the summer and the essential oil is extracted from the flowers through distillation. The resulting oil is light yellow in color that mixes well with water or coating bath salts.

PS: To prepare your bath, dissolve 1 cup of essential oil enhanced salt like Scented Salt Lavender Fields in warm bath water and soak for 15 -20 minutes. Then rinse with warm water. Your skin will feel clean and soft and your spirit relaxed and refreshed.

The Healing Benefits Of Lavender

Did you know that lavender is the key ingredient in smelling salts? Back in ancient Greek times, it was imported from Syria because of its fragrance. They were the first to use lavender as a perfume and in bathing water. The fragrant contains more than 100 different chemical compounds that will calm the central nervous system.

The smell of lavender is a potent aromatherapy oil. Many argue over whether English lavender or French lavender has a sweeter aroma. In the Middle Ages, lavender was believed to be the herb of love or what is more commonly called today an aphrodisiac. In any case, the aroma has been used since ancient times to soothe the mind into a calming relaxed state. You most often only think of lavender as an aromatic remedy; however, it also has medicinal uses.

The oil varies with the age of the flower it was made from; the early the flower is picked tends to be thought the more valuable the oil will be. Although not a lot of scientific study has been done on lavender, many herbalist still recommend lavender for antispasmodic and calming features. It has also been noted that the leaves of a lavender flower works quite well as a natural remedy for repelling insects.

Lavender is considered a safe herb to use; however, with any herbal remedy it is always best to check with your medical professional before using any herbal remedy. One teaspoon of the actual flowers boiled in a pint of water can be used as a drink for sedative, calming uses. For skin problems such as eczema and psoriasis, all 2 drops of the oil to a bland vegetable or olive oil and uses as a oil on the skin. Sore feet can be relieved by soaking a few drops of lavender it your foot bath. Warm lavender tea can be used as compress for chest congestion.

Bruises and bites can also be soothed with a lavender compress. This is the main stream practice in France and Sprain. You may also find the oil by other names when imported from China it is called White Flower Oil.

Culinary experts suggest adding a sprig of lavender to apple jelly to bring out the aroma of the apples.

Lavender can also be used to clear up oily skin by taking and mixing one - three drops into one cup of white vinegar to be used as antiseptic tonic.

Overall, lavender is one of those herbs that is a must have in the home. Adding one or two drops of the oil to a light bulb before turning it on will create a calm, relaxing feeling in the air taking away all the stresses of the day.

Bright blessings,

The Rose Tattoo Designs - So Many Meanings In One Simple Flower

Without doubt the rose is the most adored breed of flower throughout the world. One would have to guess that the popularity of this exquisite flower has been linked to the romantic connotations that roses have between lovers. Every woman would appreciate a beautiful bunch of even a single rose from their lover as a token of their love and affection. The red rose in particular undoubtedly the most popular color and relates strongly to romance as well as sexual relationships.

To other people this flower rose may have other symbolic meanings. For example it is claimed in folklore that both Aphrodite who was the Greek Goddess of Love, and Venus who was Aphrodite's Roman equivalent, revered the red rose. It also has religious connections and is known to be symbolic of the Virgin Mary. The people who claim to have witnessed a vision of Mary say that her appearance is always accompanied by the smell of roses.

If you are considering having a rose tattoo design, but are reluctant to because of the romantic implications, don't worry - I have seen many masculine guys wearing a rose tattoo, often as a reminder of departed loved ones. Some creative guys have even incorporated it into a multi-image tattoo such as having a snake curled around a dagger embedded in a rosebush.

English Roses

Here is a bit of history for you! Do you know why a beautiful English woman is typically referred to as "An English Rose"? Well it is related to some of Shakespeare's writings where he refers to the rose and compares his love (lady) with a red rose in the line, "O my love is like a red, red rose".

As well as having a romantic connotation this flower is also reflective of more aggressive situations, for example, two of England's most famous families both have this delightful flower as part of their family symbolism - the Lancasters (whose family emblem is the red rose) and the Yorks (whose coat of arms is made up of white rose).

In addition to this one of Britain's dominant political parties, the Labor Party, is symbolized by red roses.

Another more masculine use of the rose tattoo design involves the 1980's rock band 'Guns 'n' Roses', The members of the Band were well known for their hard rocking music and lifestyle yet they all wore tattoos incorporating the image of the rose albeit with tattoos of guns. As a result many fans both male and female emulated the band members by getting tattoos with images of guns and roses.

Choose Your Colors Wisely

The color of a rose has significance and meaning, so before you commit to a particular design you should choose the color that best represents the symbolism of your tattoo.

* A red rose embodies the conventional color choice and exemplifies beauty, love, bravery, passion and romanticism

* A red rose bud constitutes a symbol of pureness and loveliness

* A dark red rose stands for unconscious beauty

* A gold rose represents accomplishment

* A pink rose bespeaks friendship, appreciation, grace, happiness and gentleness

* A light pink rose symbolizes understanding and sweetness

* A white rose conveys sinlessness, innocence, silence, privacy, reverence, humbleness, youthfulness and charm

* A yellow rose personifies joyfulness, happiness, jealousy or an apology

* A lavender rose intends fascination

* A coral rose symbolizes desire

* A blue rose represents impossibilities

* A black rose traditionally represents sorrow and death

For those considering having a rose style tattoo, but are concerned that the design does not reflect their true way of life or image, just consider some of the historical facts regarding this magnificent flower and feel comfortable with having a tattoo incorporating a rose in the design.

How to Grow Herbs in Your Garden - Basil, Dill and Lavender

It doesn't matter of you are a novice or an expert at gardening, it is still considerably easy to start a herb garden. It is not only a fragrant addition to your home but it will definitely come in handy for many of your kitchen needs. Herbs are essential in making holistic cures and preventive measures for slight illnesses. Herbs also give depths to the flavor of your cooking. Herbs are also hearty and stalwart plants but you should pay attention to the specific care needed for specific herbs.

Basil - This herb is one of the most commonly grown and is highly regarded by herb garden enthusiasts all over the world. The Basil herb grows well in climates of low humidity and fertile soil. Spring is the perfect season to start growing the Basil plant, but only after all threats of frost have been alleviated as this plant is highly sensitive to cold temperatures and may become damaged if exposed.

When planting Basil, it is important to remember to place each plant about twelve inches apart. This way, it will let each plant gain access to adequate water, enabling it to grow into a healthy plant. After planting the Basil plants, it will take about six weeks to produce mature leaves that are ready for harvesting. When the harvesting is done, a proper drying method will result in a flavorful dried herb that can be used in a wide variety of recipes to tantalize your taste buds. This robust herb would have grown to approximately one or two feet tall and sprouted deep green or even purplish leaves with small white flowers during warm summer months.

Dill - Nothing could be simpler than growing the tasty herb Dill. Just a scattering of seeds thrown into your herb garden can result in stalks that can grow to four feet high. It adds a charm to your herb collection and is used in many recipes. Dills stalks will have special blue-green leaves that are feathery looking and have a bunch of striking yellow flowers.

The Dill plant is a sun loving plant, so areas with full access to sunlight will ensure a thriving plant. A distance of eight to ten inches between plants is the best way to ensure a hardy crop. After sowing the seeds, you should go back in approximately 2 weeks when the herbs reach the height of 1 inch, and thin out the area around each herb. This process will ensure that each plant receives its required amount of nutrients from the soil as well as ensuring each plant is exposed to sufficient sunlight.

The Dill plant is useful in many ways. The beautiful bright yellow flowers make an excellent tool for decorating while the seeds and leaves are the perfect addition to dips and salads. You can harvest the flowers when they are in full bloom and use them as part of your fresh flower or dried flower arrangements. After the yellow blooms have blossomed for approximately two weeks, you can then harvest the Dill seeds. A good way is to trim the flowers and dry them upside down, while suspended over a plate or a piece of paper. Such a method lets the seeds fall, ready for collection for other uses. Finally, crumbling the dried leaves is another way to add the distinct taste of Dill to any cherished recipe.

Lavender - One of the most beautiful and fragrant herbs is Lavender. This aromatic plant makes for a wonderful ground cover for any herb or flower garden as it produces delicate pink and purple flowers nestled on very tall stalks. Lavender is a perennial plant and is at its peak in the mid-summer months. Lavender is frequently a major ingredient in aromatherapy, soap making and potpourri mixes.

This hardy herb is easy to grow, however if choosing to start from seed form, may require a little extra work and TLC. The best way to introduce this plant into your garden is through fresh plants or root cuttings from your local gardening center. Such plants grow well in sunny areas with alkaline rich soil that is not water logged. As the winter months approach, the beauty of these plants will fade, however, during the next spring and summer seasons these plants will return more hardy and lush then the last.

Each of these herbs are a delectable treat offered by nature. Growing such herbs is relatively simple and they have many uses, having them in your collection will add to the fragrance and pleasure of gardening.

Tuscan Garden Design Ideas - Lavender In Italian Gardens

Lavender has become a strong symbol of the Italian garden and subsequently the Tuscan style garden and it's use will clearly suggest a Mediterranean feel in any garden. However it does require some quite specific maintenance and the number of old, woody and dying lavender plants in many gardens stand as strong testament to this fact.

A plant of Mediterranean origin, it thrives on free draining soils and adores full sun but these factors alone are not enough to keep the lavender plant healthy and vigorous. Like most Mediterranean plants the lavender has become used to being burnt in scrub fires and thus requires e reproduction of these conditions in our gardens (see www.lifeinitaly.com/garden/pruning.asp)

To maintain your lavender plant in perfect condition the most important maintenance steps are these;

- prune the dead flower stalks off after flowering with secateurs, without cutting into the leaves

- apply a pottassium based fertiliser in the autumn to aid root growth

- prune harder into the leaf layer with shears in March (or when growth starts) and leave a shape that follows the natural shape of the plant, without cutting lower than where the vegetative growth starts (into the brown part of the stem).

- apply a gravel-based mulch at around 3-4 inches

- apply a Nitrogen, Pottassium and Phosphorous fertilizer and water well.

If these steps are followed then your lavender plant will most definitely flourish!

Here in Tuscany they say that a lavender will die after 7 ears if it is not pruned correctly!

Good varieties are;

Lavandula officinalis

Lavandula angustifolia 'Hidcote blue' or

Lavandula stoechas

Pink Hatters – Who Are They?

Have you seen any young beautiful women dressed in pink hats with lavender clothing? As members of the Red Hat Society, we refer to these women as "Pink Hatters." These ladies are the "Red Hatter's" little sisters, all under the age of fifty, also known as "Ladies In Waiting."

Ladies in waiting? What could they possibly be waiting for? Pink Hatters are waiting to turn 50 years old to join in all the fun and silliness, and support of the Red Hatters. In case you haven't heard, The Red Hat Society is a social group for women over 50 who wear red hats with purple outfits. Red and Pink Hatters have a lot of fun playing dress up with their fancy hats, boas, clothing, pajamas, etc.

When a Pink Hatter reaches fifty years of age she is invited to a humorous "Red-u-ation Ceremony. During this ceremony the Red Hatters wear pink and lavender to honor their Pink Hat sisters. This is a big day for the Pink Hatter as the pink hat is taken of her head and is replaced by a red hat that now symbolizes a new phase of her life. Some of the Red Hat groups pass the pink hat on to a new lady in waiting.

Why do ladies want to be a Red Hatter? Many ladies reach a time in their life when they would like to have a little fun, meet new people, go on outings, luncheons, travel, dress a little silly and just have the mutual support system of their fellow Red Hat sisters. Women deserve a little fun after spending most of their lives raising children, taking care of the home, and working. Some women who live alone welcome the chance just to make new friends.

Some women even become a Pink Hatter in their twenties just to join in on all the fun and in anticipation of the day they will become a Red Hatter. One young Pink Hatter in her twenties gave up three months of electricity so that she would have enough money to attend a Red Hat convention in Disneyland last year. She said that she loved it and would do it again too!

Red and Pink Hatting is really a lot of fun. We do not stop playing because we grow old, we grow old because we stop playing!

Healing by Lavender

With the ever-increasing stresses that are just a part of our everyday life, it is important to find a way to relieve that stress. Everyone has a different way to deal with stress; you just need to find the one that works the best for you personally. Although there are many different remedies available, I want to focus in one just one in particular: Lavender.
Lavender has been known for its potent abilities for centuries. It was even documented that ancient Egypt used lavender during the mummification process. And even the Romans used it to freshen their breath and they put it in their baths. It is even said that the women of the Renaissance time period used dried lavender to fend off the plague. It is still widely used today, granted not for the plague or mummification, but still medicinally used.
One way to feel the healing potential of lavender is by smell. It has been found that when lavender is lightly inhaled, it will stimulate your olfactory receptor cells. These cells carry nerve impulses through your bloodstream, through your lungs, and into your brain-creating a feeling of well-being. Lavender has a great effect on increasing your good and uplifting feelings while squelching the bad. Scientists are currently conducting studies to prove that lavender has anti-convulsive effects. One study has actually shown that the elderly who have trouble sleeping have inhaled diluted lavender and found it just as effective as their prescribed sleep medication-the same with insomniacs.
Another great way to experience the benefits of diluted lavender oil is to rub it into the skin. Many have praised lavender for getting rid of or minimizing their headaches. They just rub the diluted oil right onto their temples. Also, a lot of masseuses use lavender oil during massages because it relaxes the muscles and the senses. Because of this, it is also great to put some lavender in your bath after an intense workout or a long hike. It will help reduce muscle soreness and muscle spasms that are associated with concentrated activity.

If you want a relaxing and entertaining weekend, try visiting a lavender farm. One well-known event is called "Lavender Days" at D. Gary Young's lavender farm in Mona, Utah. For this year (2008), "Lavender Days" is June 27-28. It is the largest lavender farm in North America, so it is guaranteed to be extremely pleasing to the eyes and the senses.

If you are looking for new ways to relax and stay optimistic, try lavender oil. The best way to know for a surety if it really works is to give it a try. Lavender as a mood calmer has been around for ages, and it doesn't look like it is going anywhere anytime soon.

Lavender - The Scent of Relaxation in Your Herb Garden

Amongst the many types of lavender, three main varieties stand out, English, French and Italian lavender. Some have been hybridised and these are easily grown hardy, though you can't grow the seeds, as they will revert back to the original plant. The hybridised plants have larger flowers; so if looks are what you are after, go for it.

If you intend to harvest for the oil, or to make lavender pillows, the English lavender has the strongest scent. It is the most popular lavender, with its compact bushy growth reaching about 3 feet high. It has silvery pointed leaves and tiny mauve flowers grow at the end of long stems. Different colored flowers, from white through to pinks, blues and mauves, are available and the highest concentration of oil is in the flowers.

French lavender is considered the most hardy of all, reaching a height of about five feet. If the spent blooms a snipped off regularly it will bloom for nearly nine months of the year, giving good value for money and time. The blooms cut off can be dried and used for pot-pourri or sleep pillows. So can the leaves. Given a sunny spot, it will reward you with a greater depth of colour in the blooms.

Italian lavender is the baby of the three, growing to only about two feet high. It is a bit scarcer, but well worth cultivating if you can find it. Its leaves are tiny, smooth and pointed and although similar in many respects to the other lavenders, it is still different enough to form a good contrast. It flowers from mid-winter to early summer and will make a most attractive small hedge or groundcover, the deep mauve flowers covering the bush profusely. It is not as highly perfumed as the other two lavenders.

The best time to pick lavender flowers for drying is just before the last flowers have opened. Do it on a dry day while it is still cool to retain the oil essence. Hang in a shady, airy place to dry out and then strip the flowers from the stems and store in airtight containers. Lavender is most effective visually if grown as a hedge or with several bushes grouped together. They all like a sunny well-drained position.

Lavender is used as a remedy for giddiness and faintness. It calms and relaxes and cosmetically is good for oily skin.
